Thousands of families were forced to evacuate as floodwaters drowned residential areas and villages.

Temporary relief centres were established to accommodate displaced residents, many of whom reported losing household items, educational materials, and personal belongings as water entered their homes. Transport networks were also disrupted, limiting access to affected areas and delaying relief efforts during the initial stages of the disaster.

The cyclone also caused significant economic damage, particularly in the agricultural sector. Tea plantations in the central highlands reported soil erosion and crop losses, raising concerns about long-term impacts on production. Flooding in agricultural districts further affected seasonal harvests, adding to the financial strain on farming communities already facing economic challenges.

As December approached, many displaced families marked the Christmas season while living in relief centres or half-repaired homes. Religious institutions and community groups organised many donation drives providing meals, dry rations, clothes, and basic items to the flood-affected victims. These drives adapted to the circumstances and were focused on maintaining social support and a sense of normalcy rather than large celebrations. Churches and community halls also served as centres for aid distribution and community gatherings.

Relief and recovery efforts were carried out through the coordination of government agencies (Disaster Management Centre), non-governmental organisations (Rotaract in RID 3220 – Sri Lanka & Maldives, Sri Lanka Red Cross Society), and local volunteers. Assistance included food distribution, temporary shelter, and medical support in heavily affected areas.

Authorities have stated that rehabilitation and long-term recovery will require sustained planning and resources. Strengthening disaster preparedness, improving flood management infrastructure, and enhancing climate resilience have been identified as priorities as Sri Lanka continues to experience increasingly frequent and severe weather events linked to climate change.

Therefore, as Sri Lanka continues to face increasingly frequent and severe climate-related disasters, the need for long-term planning has never been more urgent. Addressing challenges such as disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and post-disaster recovery requires not only government action but also innovative thinking and youth collaboration.

As a result, platforms such as the MUN of the Ceylon Diplomats become essential in building solutions and discussions that contribute to impacting the world globally. Through these, individuals develop a better understanding of how collective action can strengthen disaster response, humanitarian aid, and climate resilience. As a result, we encourage individuals to be a part of our upcoming MUN conference and partake in these critical conversations that contribute to making an impact globally, one voice at a time.

Rtr. Mubeena Barry

News & Editorial – MUN of the Ceylon Diplomats

Sri Lanka experienced severe flooding, landslides, and widespread displacement following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah on November 28, 2025, with disaster management authorities reporting significant casualties and damage across several regions of the country.
